The Honolulu Zoo itself is small, but easily accessible. It is found on the outer edges of the often frenetic Waikiki with the beautiful Diamond Head Crater for a back drop. I find I am conflicted each time I visit a Zoo, especially now that I have seen many of these majestic animals living freely on the Serengeti Plains of Africa. This zoo, however, offered me the first time (and heartbreakingly, maybe the last) opportunity to visit with and observe two extremely rare Black Rhinoceros. I did not see them while in Africa because it was too windy for them to come out. They are in serious danger of extinction in our lifetime, only 26 live in the wild in the Ngorongoro Crater, where I traveled with #TheGivingLens in 2013. The frightening truth is there are now fewer than 2,500 left, in isolated areas in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, and Tanzania wild. I went, hoping to get a good look, never expecting to be in such close proximity that this zoo provides.
