Under The Milky Way Tonight _ Pat Corlin Photography

After leaving the lunar landscape at the Haleakala National Park Visitor Center, Meagan, James and I continued our drive up Haleakala Crater Road to the summit. The Puu Ulaula Overlook is the volcano's highest point and home to the Haleakala Observatories, nicknamed Science City. We made it just in time to witness the breathtaking sunset. We were literally sitting above the clouds that were drifting in below as the temperatures began to drop. While we waited patiently for the stars to come out we opened a lovely bottle of cabernet for a birthday toast. The next thing we knew we were nearly alone on the mountain top when I received the most amazing birthday present from Mother Nature! The clouds lifted and the Milky Way put on an extraordinary private show. The three of us spent a good two hours at the top of the world, shooting the stars. If you look closely you can even see the faint green laser shooting out from the observatory in the lower left portion of this image. *The lasers are part of the observatories’ adaptive optics systems, which compensate for distortions in light traveling through the Earth’s atmosphere *Astronomy, Science| October 15th, 2013 .#PhotoBucketList Item √ ...
