“Kashtalo” (translated as “the untouchables”) is the name given to the lowest and poorest caste in the Roma hierarchy. The photo depicts a child running around the household of a Roma community, one of the few left to live next to the forests, in the Carpathian Mountains. They survive by collecting mushrooms and berries from the woods and selling them in the local village markets for very small money.
