Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near Elk Mountain, British Columbia. There is an old forest service road that meanders up through the mountains, which leads to this stunning view. It was winter so the road up was difficult, but it was well worth the effort.

Time

It was the early evening, roughly 5:00.

Lighting

Obviously, good lighting is what makes a photo. Take a look at my picture again and imagine it without the sunset in the background...pretty boring eh? Be patient, and wait for the right lighting. Now that is easier said then done. Finding good lighting in nature requires patience and commitment. You might go out to the same spot three days in a row and get bland photos, but eventually the clouds will part, the sun will set, and you will finally get your photo.

Equipment

Nikon D7100, 18-140 Nothing fancy, it is just a matter of putting yourself in the right spot.

Inspiration

I love being outdoors and I treasure photos that can capture the experience of being outside. Whenever I am out shooting landscapes, I always challenge myself to "take a photo that is desktop worthy." Meaning, it needs to be good enough for someone to want to use as their desktop wallpaper. This challenges me to constantly be analyzing my strategy when taking photos and pushes me to keep doing it.

Editing

Yes, but not much. I used curves to soften and flatten the blacks, I added a little clarity, and then just a touch of saturation.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7100, 18-140, 35mm 1.4, ND filters, extra batteries, and snacks.

Feedback

Only spend so much time online looking at other peoples work. Stop sitting on your butt, and go take some photos. Stop making excuses, and go take some photos. The only way to put yourself in a position to capture a photo with good lighting and an interesting subject, is to simply go outside and take photos. Be dedicated to trying to capture a good image and be willing to work for it. Put in the time, put in the effort, and you will begin to capture great images.
