On the North Side of Grand Cayman, Sargassum washes up on the iron shore for miles. Over the past 5 years Sargassum or Sargasso seaweed has been covering the shores of the Caribbean, sometimes piling upwards of 10 feet on the once pristine coastlines. Many opinions have been shared on possible causes including the BP oil spill, warming ocean temperatures and pollution washing into the Atlantic via the Amazon and Mississippi. The issue continues to be swept under the rug in fear of driving away tourists that must of these Caribbean Islands depend on.
