Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Hilton Head Island on my back patio.

Time

It was early evening when I took this picture. I like to shoot during the golden hour.

Lighting

I shoot a lot of my flower photos with natural light. It's important to move around the flower and change your point of view to make sure that the light is falling on the part of the flower that you want to focus on.

Equipment

I shoot with a Nikon D3200, I used a Nikon 18-55mm lens with a Vivitar macro attachment lens.

Inspiration

I had been looking out on my back patio and I noticed the way the light was falling on this one particular flower. It looked like it was glowing, so I ran and got my camera!

Editing

I edit all of my photos in Lightroom. For this shot I pushed up the highlights, bumped up the contrast, added a little vibrance, and I also added a vignette.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D3200, Nikon 18-55mm lens, Nikon 55-200mm lens, extra SD cards, battery charger, and also a lens cleaning kit.

Feedback

I think some of the best advice would be to set aside time each week to get out and practice. Go out and really look at things from a photographers perspective. Pay attention to the light because it can make or break your photo. If you are shooting a flower mid afternoon and the light is really harsh, something as simple as blocking the sun with your body and casting it into shadow will get you much better results. Also, be sure to really pay attention to composing your shot and selecting your focus. Make sure that what you want to show off in your subject is in sharp focus.
