Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken while walking around at Castro Street in Mountain View, California... I was mostly looking for good street-photography shots, but could not resist shooting this dark passage.

Time

I shot this in the evening at about 7:20pm in a November night, so it was pretty dark out.

Lighting

The lighting is mostly from the lamps in the image.. I was drawn to the contrast between the light leading towards the darkness.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon Rebel t3i using a Sigma 35mm prime art lens at f/3.2 ISO 1000 for 1/50s. The high ISO is mostly because I was hand-holding this shot and didn't want to get any motion blur into it.

Inspiration

The scene itself.. How can you avoid a mystical pathway towards darkness ;)

Editing

Yes, if you haven't noticed already the image is not the right-side up. I also had to increase saturation to pull out some of the colors on the walls. I also made the center of the image true black (there were some red lights from cars back there in the original)

In my camera bag

Well my full kit includes the 35mm f/1.4 Sigma Art lens (my favorite lens for street photography), the 24-70mm Canon f/2.8 L lens (favorite for landscapes), the Canon 70-300mm and Sigma 50-500mm whenever I shoot wildlife. I also tend to carry around a 10-stop ND filter, some macro extension tubes and the MeFoto Roadtrip tripod.

Feedback

Previsualize your post-processing. Most images like this that take you to places of fantasy require a lot of post-processing to take away the reality and to introduce the sense of mystery. So if you can previsualize what you finally want from the image, it usually helps you take a better shot capturing the elements that you want to preserve.
