Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside on a balcony. The roof of the balcony was a transparent greenish sheet and the light reflected through it had this greenish hue that you see in this photo. The roof of the balcony can be seen reflected in the black iris. It almost looks like a window opening to the sky. I believe this is a good attempt at reflection photography.

Time

I was trying to create this photo from the moment the idea was born. It took me several tries and several days to get the perfect shot. I took this photo around midday when the sun was directly over the roof and shining very brightly. It was a clear cloudless day. The conditions were good but I needed to find the right angle for the camera and the eye to get this uplifted look.

Lighting

This image had to be more than an eye staring upwards...and I thought this green light added a magical quality and maybe even an aura of fantasy. So I took this around midday when the sun was very bright in the sky but came filtered through the transparent sheet, adding a green glow to the image.

Equipment

The camera used was a Canon Power shot A2600, at a shutter speed of 1/100 seconds. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I was intrigued by the photo contest 'Into the void' and I wanted to take an unusual and unique perspective on the theme. I realized that I didn't have to travel far to get what I wanted. There is wonder in the everyday things around us if only we look at them with new eyes.

Editing

Actually I did not have to do much post processing because I thought I captured the photo the exact way I needed...however, I added a few touches by adjusting the brightness and contrast, color balance, hue saturation and airbrushed a few lines on the skin. I use GIMP which is very useful in editing.

In my camera bag

Normally I take my camera, a Canon wherever I go if I think that there might be something worth capturing and keeping.

Feedback

I think that in photography, a new way of looking at something is essential... Something else I realized was that you did not need to travel far looking for the perfect place or a beautiful place. Even something as ordinary human eyes could be made to look extraordinary with the right angle and unusual lighting. At first I was discouraged in my attempts at reflection photography because of the difficulty of finding a perfect lake or smooth surface like that which is mostly used. However, I realized that a small human eye could take in the sky, the expanse and the void...and make a perfect reflection of something... So I think that perseverance (to keep on trying for days at one photo) and a love of photography is very important to get that perfect shot you have in your mind.
