The Pottawatomie and Ottawa Native American Tribes lived off this grassy dune fauna before the turn of the century and have burial grounds near this site at Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area in Saugatuck, MI. The Native American term "Saugatuck"means "mouth of the river". The first postmaster, R.R.Crosby, was familiar with the term and thought it appropriate for the city which sits near the mouth of the Kalamazoo River emptying into Lake Michigan.

Saugatuck is a popular tourist town in the US which has kept the natural wonders intact through the hard work of the community. It's like a mini Key West without the usual high profile commerce; no Mac D's etc.
