I just returned from a beautiful place, where the Eastern Sierra slopes down into the smaller hills and valleys of the Mojave Desert. I have never been to a place where the geological changes were so dramatic. An awe inspiring wall of giant granite mountains covered with fresh snow spanned the scene, where California's tallest peak (Mt. Whitney) is tucked away between the crags. Cottontop and Cholla Cactus speckled the landscape, while boulders pilled high, hidding arches between the spires. I was surprised to hear a great horned owl living in one of the tall rocks facing west. The night sky was bright with stars and brighter still when the moon rose. The temperature at night was below freezing and the days were not much warmer. Sleep was elusive, but not missed. I will return soon.
