Behind The Lens

Location

Waking up early on a weekend is not for everyone. In order to capture this moment, I have to drive around 45mins to this particular coastline. Our province was blessed with a vast coastline in El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, Philippines.

Time

The night before, you have to prepare your gears, clean them, check the filters, batteries, tripod, headlamps. Allot 2 hours before sunrise and drive so that you still have time to scout the place. This photo was taken on a sunrise where the sun is about to rise in the horizon.

Lighting

I've been in this location for a quite a while, this is my practice ground, same background but with different tides, you can scout for a new foreground and different angles. Always try to look for more perspective, push your creativity.

Equipment

I use Nikon D800 with Nikon 16-35 f/4 on a Manfrotto aluminum tripod with RRS ballhead, using Phottix Aion wireles remote is more convenient, you can click the shutter and with long exposure, you can scout for the next angle. Always bring head lamp when shooting landscapes, especially at this time of the day.

Inspiration

Every photo is different, time of day, weather, cloud formation. I love the feel of this scene, it makes me feel relaxed. Your foreground should properly be placed into the frame where every element are in one team.

Editing

When shooting landscapes, I highly recommend shooting in RAW. Which after you took the photo, you need to post process them. Lowering the highlights and lifting some shadows is a must to show more details in your photo. Boosting a little color to your taste.

In my camera bag

I usually bring a messenger bag or a belt bag for this kind of shoot. The important things for a landscape photographer are; ND filters, GND filters, filter ring, adaptor ring. Of course you camera and lens, plus the wired or wireless remote, you also need some wipes in case the waves might splash your filters or lenses. Headlamp is recommended because you don't need to hold it in your hands when your both hands are busy setting up for the shot.

Feedback

Always explore more angles, experiment from short and long exposure. Go out of your usual perspective and try something new. Surely there are a lot of angles that you haven't see
