Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the bluff overlooking Baker Beach and the majestic Golden Gate Bridge at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, California. Baker Beach is a popular beach for sun bathing, fishing, dog walking, and playing in the sand. The far end of the beach is the original site where the infamous Burning Man Festival began.

Time

I stopped to check the surf at a hidden spot close to here and when I arrived I was greeted with this beautiful sight. It was early afternoon and we had scattered showers throughout the region that day. Rainbows were popping up all over and I was lucky enough to capture this one in my photo.

Lighting

The fog comes and goes so quickly with the heavy wind that blows through the "gate" I knew I only had a few moments before the conditions changed and I would lose the shot. Within a few seconds of me capturing this photo the rainbow was gone.

Equipment

I wish I could say I was quick enough on the draw to use my Canon, but the closest camera to me at the time was my iPhone 6. #shotoniphone #shotoniphone6

Inspiration

Well, you really can't get a bigger pot o' gold bigger than this!

Editing

The only post processing I needed to do on this one was to adjust the light balance a bit due to some dark clouds overhead. The rest was the right conditions coming together at the right time.

In my camera bag

My everyday camera is a Canon 60D with a Canon EFS 18-135mm lens. For the far away shots I also keep a 100-300mm in my bag and a 0.45 Wide Angle / Macro lens to play with here and there.

Feedback

It's all about timing and always being ready to take the next shot. I try to have my camera close to me whenever I can so that I will be ready to capture sights like the one above.
