Location
I took this photo in the Butterfly Garden of the Orchideeënhoeve Luttelgeest in the Netherlands. There are large gardens with flowers and plants and also a tropical garden with all kinds of butterflies.Time
It was almost Christmas and the garden was decorated with lots of Christmas lights, it was really beautiful! The lights make the difference, without the lights the photo would be less interesting.Lighting
You can also put little (Christmas) lights at the background yourself. The results will be amazing!Equipment
My equipment; Canon eos 6D with the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens. The composition is very important, I never use a tripod, so I'm free to make any composition.Inspiration
I think the beautiful wings of this little butterfly inspired me the most. You can look right through them and de Christmas lights looks just wonderful behind the wings.Editing
I only raised the brightness slightly, thats all.In my camera bag
I mostly shoot landscapes and also weather photo's. In my bag you'll find a Canon Eos 6D, the Tamron AF SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD, the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0L USM and the Canon EF USM 100mm f/2.8 Macro. I almost always use a graduated neutral density filter. There are different filters in my bag with different densities (ND2, ND4 and ND6, all soft grad).Feedback
First you have to find a subject, in this case the butterfly. I just look through the camera; zoom in and out to see what is happening. Sometimes I have to move closer or move further away from the subject to find the perfect composition and depth of field. I used the lights at the background to make the photo more interesting, but you can also play with sunlight through the trees or on the water, it gives wonderful bokeh.
