Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at University of Michigan's Matthaei Botanical Gardens in northeast Ann Arbor Michigan.

Time

Afternoon.

Lighting

It was a sunny day. Since they were a group of small animals I could position myself in the direction to get the best lighting.

Equipment

Equipment used was a Canon 7d with Canon 70-200mm F2.8 IS

Inspiration

Spring is always a magical time of renewal. As a photographer its hard not to be drawn to document this event every year. During my hike around the garden I crossed path with these young geese and their parents making their way to a pond.

Editing

I did slight adjustments to the image in Photoshop as I would with any image.

In my camera bag

It depends on what I am photographing.

Feedback

Wildlife photography takes a keen eye and a lot of patience. Move slow and know when to back off and give your subjects space. In the beginning the animals need to know the shutter sound is not a threat. Shoot sparingly till they get use to the noise of your camera. At first only take shots of the parents when photographing the families. The parents need to know you are not singling out their young. Once they know the sound of your shutter is not going to cause harm to them you can slowly get closer and take photos of the young. But be aware of the parents behavior because they can still be aggressive if you overstep too much.
