Location
This photo was taken just after climbing down a very steep hill covered in extremely loose rock to the edge of the lake, somewhere in the vicinity of Independence, Kansas.Time
This photo was shot just after the sun broke over the horizon. Myself and a friend had woken up early to shoot sunrise over this area before heading off to training the next morning. We patently waited on top of this rock covered levy shooting some early morning star pics on a moonless night as well. All the time listening to a bunch of coyotes howling in the field down below us on the side of the levy opposite the lake... A little close for comfort...Lighting
The lighting this time was just one of those, right place at the right time, with a little preparation and thought put into it. It was basically, if I set up here and the sun comes up and does what it should... This will work! ...and for once, it actually worked out that way.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Nikon D750 with a 24-120mm lens on a compact Manfrotto tripod, triggered by a Nikon wireless remote, at a focal length of 44mm. No filter needed for this shot. It was shot at f16 with a 3 second shutter speed @ ISO 100.Inspiration
I saw this scraggly looking tree and thought it kinda looked haunted at first as the sun came up, so I thought I would try and shoot it, and originally take a different approach a maybe more "eerie theme" if you will...Editing
With this shot there was very little in post production. This shot really just had a few of the colors boosted to make them stand out. Such as the blue was washed out from the over powering yellow and orange from the sun. This is one shot, not a composite of multiples. Mother Nature provided the color on this one!In my camera bag
I normally carry my D750, a tripod, mostly a compact Manfrotto just as it is easy to carry far off into the wild compared to my other tripod... My couple of go to lenses are my Nikon 24mm-120mm f4 N glass, a Nikkor 100mm f 2.8 Marco, and a Nikon 50mm f1.4, Sigma 10mm-20mm f3.5, Nikon wireless remote, and a handful of different lens filters.Feedback
Have a general game plan to capture what you want... Be patient! Be flexible! Adapt as needed... Don't be afraid to take chances! Only show your best work, and most importantly.... HAVE FUN! There have been times I have shown up to the same location 15 times to try and get that " magical" shot.. and have had to come back 10 more to try and get it! Don't get discouraged, keep on shooting!!!
