Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the end of my driveway in northern Ontario, Canada. Up to thirty or more butterflies come each spring to lick the salt off the gravel; it's a beautiful sight.

Time

I noticed the butterflies start to gather for the first time last spring around 11am. Not long after, multiple yellow huddles covered the end of my driveway like a patchwork quilt. Early afternoons, while they're sleepily enjoying the suns warm rays, are the best time to capture photos of them.

Lighting

I wanted to keep this image as natural as possible. I got right down on the gravel driveway as to not cast any shadows, and let the sun do the rest.

Equipment

This image was shot using a Nikon D5200 with its original 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

Ever since I was a young girl a butterflies natural beauty and grace have inspired my photography. I had the chance to visit a a butterfly garden when I was a child, but having the chance to see them in their natural environment each spring is amazing. It was a special moment to be able to get so close and capture the little details of their afternoon.

Editing

Usually I try to keep my photos as natural possible. I do however find that using only sunlight for lighting can make the exposure a little high, washing out the vividness of the colors. I used my basic photo editing on my computer to turn down the exposure slightly as well as turn up the warmth and contrast.

In my camera bag

The first thing I make sure to put in my bag is my camera body and memory card. Next a basic 18-55mm lens, a 55-200mm telephoto lens, an extra battery along with the charger, and my cameras manual. Because I enjoy photographing nature, I prefer to avoid an over packed, heavy camera bag.

Feedback

Using a macro setting on your camera will help focus and bring out the tiny details. Most importantly, have the patience to move slowly and sit quietly, it will be worth the beautiful shot!
