Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Red Bull Air Race World Championships at Ascot racecourse back in 2015, this was Nigel Lamb's plane and at the time he was the reigning champion but did not go on to win this season. Great day out.

Time

I had managed to work my way down to the railings of the racecourse during the morning, the closest point to the start/finish line I could manage and great because there were no obstructions. The races ran from around midday until the heat final around 4.00pm, I can't honestly say when I took the photo other than between those times, I took a lot over the course of the day.

Lighting

Unfortunately the day was rather one of those bland grey/white sky days. So I suppose it just goes to show you don't need good lighting for a good photo.

Equipment

Handheld Sony a58 with Sony APS-C DT 55-200mm F4-5.6 SAM Zoom Lens

Inspiration

I have always liked planes and went to the race with the intention of catching some great shots.

Editing

It was quite a long time ago but I'm pretty sure I only cropped and enhanced the yellow slightly to make it pop a bit more against the dull background.

In my camera bag

Back when I took this I had my Sony a58 with my 55-200 and 70-300 zoom, the 300 was no good as it kept hunting when using auto focus.

Feedback

As it was the first time doing action photography I spoke to a friend who is into taking shots of military jets for advice, I also read books and articles on line to find the best general settings for action photography, the most pertinent being about panning and another being the different shutter speeds for capturing blurred propellers. I would advise anyone to do a little bit of research before heading out to do any kind of photography that is new to them, they tend to lay out a range of settings which you can then play with to get your preferred end result.
