I took this photo at the launch of a hotel conference centre that I was covering for a newspaper. The speeches were long and dull and the light was perfect ... The toughest part of taking the photo was waiting for a group of revellers to move away from the area - It still surprises me how serene the scene is when the room was so loud.Time
It was taken in the early afternoon. The room was packed with people enjoying canapés and champagne - I was waiting to interview the manager who was taking groups of investors and clients for a tour of the hotel. The hotel is on the ocean front in Cape Town and I had exhausted my interest in the yachts and views outside. I loved the simplicity of the lines and textures of this scene, there was a huge window letting the natural light in.Lighting
The light was natural lighting coming through a huge window, looking out onto the ocean.Equipment
My Nikon D40 Nikon 55 - 200 mm lens I used a tall bar table as a tripodInspiration
I loved the shapes and textures in this incredibly simple scene. I thought it would translate well into a black and white image.Editing
I used Lightroom to boost the contrast and tones on the black and white image. In my camera bag
I am a reporter so my equipment is simple - I have a Nikon D40, Nikon 55 - 200 mm lens and a Nikon 18.0 - 55.0mm lens. I always have a tripod in my car, but can rarely be bothered to carry it around a press conference.Feedback
I think the magic in this image is in its simplicity. Remember as soon as there are shadows and highlights there is the possibility of a strong black and white image.
