This was shot through a sculpture along Sydney's coast which was set up for the annual sculpture by the sea. This particular sculpture was very curvy an reminded me somewhat of the waves that crashed along the coast. As soon as I seen the young surfer walking out jump in, I knew exactly how I wanted to capture it through the sculpture.

Location
This photo was taken along the walkway in Tamarama Park, which is only a stones throw away from the well known Bondi beach in Sydney. It was taken whilst the inaugural Sculpture by the sea event was being held. This meant that there were many sculptures placed along the coast of Sydney for the publics viewing.Time
This shot was taken in the afternoon at around 4:30pm. This is the time many surfers head on out to catch a few waves after a hard days work.Lighting
Since it was late in the afternoon and was an overcast day, I was able to expose the image exactly how I wanted it to look straight from the camera. Since I knew the waves were crashing just before the rocks an creating a white wash, I wanted to under expose the image by a stop for that. I knew the surfer was wearing a dark wet suit which would make him pop out in the image.Equipment
This shot was handheld and was taken with my Canon 70d camera body with a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 camera lens attached. There was no flash or other equipment used.Inspiration
The Sculpture by the sea event itself inspired me to take a different approach to shooting surfers that day. With an event that is only held for a week or two, it allows new elements to be brought into a scene therefore I was able to achieve a new perspective of things.Editing
This image was originally shot in colour. I later converted it to black and white in post as I thought it gave more focus towards the surfer in the centre of the shot.In my camera bag
As of late, I have recently converted from Canon to Nikon (the dark side) So I now pack into my bag a Nikon D800e with 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. This is usually my go-to setup. I like to travel light. I also have a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 which I can also fit into my bag if I feel like I'm going to need that extra zoom length.Feedback
Keep looking for new perspectives. Try looking out for new elements to position an shoot through or around to try an frame your subject. You will feel more accomplished and satisfied with your work when you sit down an look back on an image to know that you stepped away from the standard point an shoot location to try an create something fresh and unique.
