Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the old part of the University of Otago in late spring.

Time

It was taken just after lunch when the rain had lifted and class had just finished. I was fortunate enough to capture someone with a similar coloured jacket as the magnolia blossoms which sort of ties it all together.

Lighting

No.. I pretty much winged the lighting. It was a break in the rain for about fifteen minutes and I just thought the pink would look splendid against the grey of the sky and of the building.

Equipment

This was shot handheld on an Olympus E-M10 mark II, with a M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ lens with no flash

Inspiration

When I was growing up my dad used to read me a story about a man called Mr Magnolia, who had only one boot. Since then I have always loved the magnolia tree, not only for its spectacular blossom but also because the meaning of the magnolia means nobility, perseverance and dignity. When I saw this particular tree I just knew I had to come back and take the picture so I could show my dad.

Editing

Nope no processing, the only thing I did was to straighten the image as I shot it handheld and it was slightly wonky.

In my camera bag

Equipment in my bag.. I have an extra memory card, a Manfrotto tripod (which is delightful but weighs an enormous amount) an Olympus E-M10 body and a pancake lens, as well as a zoom lens.

Feedback

Otago has a pretty diverse weather pattern, you can have snow, hail, rain, wind and sunshine all within the space of an hour. The trick is to be in the right place at the right time really, as it is with all photography. If you have scoped out the location and the shot before you shoot it, you can anticipate the weather that you want to be in the background, and come back when it is happening! I was fortunate that this person walked through in the same colour puffer jacket as the magnolia blossoms.
