Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in Rexburg, Idaho on my Husband's Grandmothers farm.

Time

The picture was taken September 18th 2015 at 1:30 pm.

Lighting

It was mostly sunny this day, mid afternoon. I knew there would be harsh lighting to deal with. I found some shady areas and than I saw this spot. The background was an old barbed wire fence, an old log structure, and some farm equipment. I loved the lighting, and used it to my advantage. I remember when I shot this; as I l looked through the lens at her eyes. There was no pose really, just that look.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5d mark ii, Canon 24-70 mm lens and I was using my reflector.

Inspiration

My husband's sweet Gramma had recently passed away, and it was the last opportunity we had to say goodbye to her home and mingle around the property, as it was going to be sold. My husband and some family members met to share our last goodbyes of the farm house. I wanted to capture the events on camera.

Editing

I actually struggled a lot with the post processing if I remember correctly. I shoot raw, I do a majority of editing in lightroom and was not happy with it. Once, I decided to go with black and white, I knew it was a winner. I quickly ran it through portrait professional and finished the edit in Photoshop CC where I removed some unwanted objects. (I am a self taught photographer. I had absolutely no experience with cameras, and no experience with editing soft wear in the beginning.) I often feel that my pictures are terrible, I am my own worst critic because I don't have the credentials of a "professional photographer. I self taught myself when I was actually going through chemo for breast cancer. I needed to occupy my thoughts and find something I loved to give purpose and meaning to my life. This picture captured the meaning of life, the coming and going and the farewell.

In my camera bag

I carry my Canon 5d mark ii, my canon 24-70-mm f2.8L Lens, and my Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS ll lens. I rarely use a tri pod, and always have a reflector handy. My flash I carry is 580ex ii.

Feedback

For this particular photo, I would say, don't be wary of full sun, mid day photo shoots. You can always find a spot to capture a great picture. My other advice is to maybe set the mood, have them think of something meaningful to them. I wish I had used Gramma's farm for family pictures, I didn't realize the hidden gem she had.
