Behind The Lens

Location

Photo was taken in the apartment Ms. Sesser was living in at the time. I brought my portable backdrop and lighting kit with me to create the look she was seeking.

Time

We shot in the late morning, giving her time for her friend to do her makeup for her.

Lighting

Lighting was a bit tricky. The size of the apartment did not lend itself to a normal lighting arrangement. I opened the blinds of the patio door, leaving a shear white curtain over the opening. The steady lights were set to the sides to minimize shadows, both being to photo left, one nearly parallel to her and above, and one near me laying on the floor. I then used my speed light, pointing behind me and upwards to add the rest of the light needed to light the scene.

Equipment

I shot this on my Canon EOS Rebel T21 with my EF-S 18-55 mm lens. Camera was mounted on a tripos, with a Newer TT560 speedlight and a Newer portable studio light and backdrop kit.

Inspiration

Ms. Sesser contacted me about doing a shoot that was more about her personality and spirit.

Editing

I did some minor post processing using Portrait Professional to touch up some minor blemishes and to smooth the background some.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry my Canon T2i, and my EF-S 18-55mm and 55-250mm lenses, and my Newer TT560 speed light.

Feedback

When doing a shoot in a location you have never been in before, especially someone's apartment, be adaptable. Do not go in expecting to set up like you do in a studio environment. Look to use the space to help shape the light, especially in small tight spaces. Using the walls and ceiling to bounce the light from your flash can help to fill the room with light and minimize harsh shadows.
