Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in a small town in South Africa called Montagu. This is in an area called the Little Karoo. In the middle of Montagu is a small protected pond which is a breeding area for a number of birds. I am an amateur photographer.

Time

This image was taken at 10:30 in the morning.

Lighting

The lighting was quite flat as can be seen by the grey background sky, but the season is the end of our winter in an area that mostly gets winter rainfall, so the lack of a blue sky in normal - but that said it did allow the image to have no deep shadows.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7100, using a standard Nikon 70-300mm AF-S VR Zoom lens @1/1250, f/6.3, iso 400.

Inspiration

inspiration for this image was seeing so many birds building nests that it was an obvious action to take as I have literally 100's of birds to take pictures of each carrying twigs. If I missed one opportunity, then there were at least 5 or 6 more doing the same thing at the same time. The difficulty was to decide on which bird to follow to get the right conditions

Editing

The main post processing was to crop out the poor background and a slight tweek on the levels. I only use Adobe Elements for my processing.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Nikon D7100, with the kit 18-105mm, the Nikkor 70-300mm zoom, a Sigma 10-20 f4.5 and a Tamron 24-70mm f2,8. I occasionally use a tripod - a Manfrotto with a Sirui ball head as well as a Sirui mono-pod - which I use extensively with the 150-600 Sigma. I use a Lexar Professional 2000x 32GB memory card as my #1 and Sandisk Extreme Plus 32GB as the backup card, for no other reason as that is what was available in my ThinkTank backpack camera bag.
