This photo was taken at the Ess Na Laragh waterfall in Glenariff, County Antrim, Ireland. Glenariff is known as "Queen of the Glens" and it's not hard to see why. The spectacular views from here are unmatched anywhere. Glenariff Forest Park has two waterfalls, the winding Ess Na Laragh pictured above and the horseshoe shaped Ess Na Crub.Time
This shot was taken at 10am, which posed a real challenge as the wooden footbridge on which the shot was taken was getting a lot of traffic from hikers and tourists. It was difficult to get a shot which didn't suffer from movement due to the footfall over the bridge.Lighting
I wanted to really blur out the water, so it looked like a robe of silk twisting and flowing over the rocks. To avoid overexposure I used an ND filter from Lee Filters known as the little stopper.Equipment
I used a Nikon D3000 DSLR, a Manfrotto BeFree tripod and a neutral density filter from Lee.Inspiration
The waterfalls at Glenariff are always inspiring to anyone who passes them. I've taken a lot of images of hills and landscapes for HikersBlog, my hiking blog, but one thing which was missing was a nice, fluid photo of this stunning waterfall. I came here specifically for this shot, having walked past the waterfall previously on a walking trip.Editing
A little colour correction to remove the characteristic blue cast Lee filters are known for. The motion in the water was done in-camera.In my camera bag
I always carry a 35mm prime and a sigma wide angle, in addition to an intervalometer, some spare batteries and some Lee filters. I try not to bog myself down with too much equipment, instead just getting out more with lighter kit and hoping to be there at that magic moment. All the kit in the world is no use to you if you can't be bothered to go somewhere nice with it.Feedback
Moving water shots are great if there are solid objects nearby to ground the image, such as rocks. Leading lines like the handrail also help add structure to the image.
