Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Westinghouse Memorial monument which is next to a lovely lily pond at the entrance to the Steven Faloon trail of Schenley Park.

Time

At golden hour, end of a nice sunny day in June.

Lighting

I framed the model near the monument and used an off camera flash with a soft reflector directed towards it’s bronze construction. The combination of the bounced light and beautiful weather yielded for perfect golden hues that supplemented the models warm skin tones and hair.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 60D with a prime 50mm f1.4 lens along with the Canon Speedlite 580EX flash, small umbrella, tripod and light stand.

Inspiration

I was in the right place at the right time. No, really all of the various elements just came together like an amazing puzzle. For example, I hadn't told the model to come wearing a sun necklace, but it turned out perfect for the emotional tone of the finished image.

Editing

Didn't do much post-processing. I adjusted the color temperature just a little, and bumped up the exposure to +25, and clarity +3.

In my camera bag

My go two lenses are the 50mm f/1.4 and the 24-105 f/4 L lens. Those are the two lenses I bring the most on shoots, as well as a few batteries and a memory card backup. When I’m shooting events, and some portraits I’ll also take a tripod, lights and stands, reflectors and filters. Now that’s my photography list but I’m also a filmmaker so when I have video assignments I’ll make sure to bring sound equipment as well. The Rode Video Mic Pro is great for that.

Feedback

Find cool locations to shoot at, and utilize that golden hour which casts a beautiful glow on your subjects. I try to use natural lighting whenever possible. But when I do use artificial lighting I try to have it be supplementary to what's already available.
