Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo a short distance from my home. it is an old derelict farmhouse, empty now for about five years. It is located around two miles from Pomeroy, Co Tyrone. a largely rural area the old stone house would have been quite a good building in its time.

Time

This image was taken mid afternoon on a quick stop off on the way home.

Lighting

i just took this photo in natural light, it was still fairly bright in the day so no additional lighting was required. i liked the way the red door stood out against the natural whitewashed walls.

Equipment

I had only recently bought my camera, a Sony Cybershot with 63x zoom, though definitely not needed for this shot. I was "playing" with the camera to find out what it done and took this image using the settings which allowed me just to keep the reds with the rest of the image in mono. Just a hand held shot there was no other equipment used.

Inspiration

The red door - just simply that. it just caught my attention as it was such a contrast to the whitewashed walls. the run down condition of the door gave it all the character it needed with the paint flaking away to show the age.

Editing

As I was only a beginner I really had no experience of using any programmes and had just took up photoshop so the processing was absolutely minimal.

In my camera bag

I am a "very" amateur photographer but since taking this image i have started to build up some gear. I now have a Fujifilm XT-10 to go along with my Sony. i also carry about a simple set of filters. i have a cheap tripod that i keep in the boot of the car for anytime i need it, but looking at getting an upgrade to a more robust and sturdier model. The Fuji came with two lenses, the 16-50 and 50-230 versions. While I would like to build on this it is enough for what I need at the moment. in addition to this i have a shutter release cable with lock button for taking longer exposures at night time and a wee pocket torch to help me out.

Feedback

This was a very basic shot but looking back and taking on board comments from colleagues it would make a few changes. cutting back the overhanging branches which distract from the door would help focus on the door.
