Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at Moraine Lake in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. I was at the base of the giant rocks which took a bit of maneuvering to get down too, but it was worth it for the different point of view.
Time
This shot was taken during an early morning sunrise shoot. I woke up at about 4:30am to get to the lake by 5:00am for a 5:30am sunrise. It's always a gamble whether waking up so early will pay off, but in this case it definitely did.
Lighting
The lighting was all natural and due to the early morning hours came it at a nice angle.
Equipment
For this photograph I used a gitzo tripod and ballhead, a Canon 5D Mark III camera with a wide angle 16-35mm 2.8L Canon lens. It was very close to the ground and I was squatting when taking the photo. I used a remote shutter cord to avoid motion blue and I also used a Lee Filters graduated filter to allow for a long exposure with detail in the sky.
Inspiration
I have long seen photos of Banff, Canada, and this lake was one of my favorite scenes. It was a beautiful peaceful morning and it brings back incredible memories of my trip to Canada.
Editing
Yes, but nothing crazy! I darkened the overall scene to add contrast and added a bit of saturation, but that's about it.
In my camera bag
I normally carry one Canon body, a wide angle lens for landscapes and a long lens (70-200) for wildlife. If I'm not worried about weight I'll also carry a macro lens (100mm 2.8L) for detail shots. For landscapes I always carry a polarizer and neutral density filter as well as a cable release.
Feedback
Use a tripod to avoid motion blur and get the best possible sharpness. Learn to use filters -- especially polarizing as glare isn't something you can remove in post processing. Shoot a variety of angles; walk around your subject and experiment. Talk to other photographers and get inspiration online before your trip.
