Location
This was taken on our outdoor table at an accommodation we were at on Magnetic Island in Australia. There weren't many opportunities to get one by itself with the baubles of light behind, so it took a bit of patienceTime
I reckon it was around 8am, just before we headed out to the beach. I balanced the camera on the table edge, waiting for one to walk into my viewfinder. Funnily enough, I was after a slightly closer shot than I got, but instantly fell in love with what I did get.Lighting
Using the sun on the leaves in the background gave me the lovely soft look I was after. It really seperates the subject from its surroundings.Equipment
This was shot on a Fujiflm XT1 using a 50-140mm 2.8 lens. It was shot at 1/60th second at f.2.8, ISO 200, at around 85mm. A great portrait length.Inspiration
I adore wildlife, and want to take my photography with birds further, so being on holiday in Australia was a really great opportunity.Editing
Nothing was done to this photo afterwards. It was a JPEG straight out of the camera. In my camera bag
So since this photo, I have actually sold my XT1 to fund my Canon kit. So now, my standard kit is a 5DIII, 16-35 f.2.8 II, 24-70 f2.8 II, 70-200 f2.8 II, and a fairly inexpensive Hama tripodFeedback
If I were to take this image with my current equipment, it would be the Canon 70-200mm lens so I can really get close to the birds without frightening them off. These Lorakeets are particularly friendly, and usually expect to steal some of your breakfast, so getting close wasn't a problem. The problem was getting one by itself, as there tended to always be a group of them. Magnetic Island is absolutely full of birds life, as well as other animals (Wallaby, Koala etc). There are a couple of really nice walks up to the old WWII forts that provide plenty of wildlife opportunities, as well as some stunning views.
