A medium-sized bird with a highly distinctive coloration, the Common Flameback, a woodpecker, is easily distinguishable by its golden back feathers and its red rump. Its head is striped black and white with a black band running from the eyes to the all-black hindneck as well as a single submoustachial stripe that runs down to its scaly-patterned breast and belly. The male exhibits a flaming red crown while the female has an all-black crown. Has a rather small bill and only three toes.
