Location
This photo was taken on a beautiful fall day in Philly...inside a hotel room. At the time I took this photo, I was working to use available light to shoot portraits with drama.Time
This image was taken between 11:30-12:30 PM.Lighting
The idea (based on what I had learned from a noteable wedding photographer) was to draw the curtains so that only a sliver of light would come through in order to light the subject and thus darken all the distractions in an otherwise dreary hotel room. Most weddings have the bride getting ready in a hotel room or bedroom that is less than dramatic in its decor.Equipment
I used a Nikon D4S with a 24-70 lens.Inspiration
I was with a group of photographers and we were all working on raising the bar on our bridal work.Editing
Opened in Lightroom and made additional adjustments in PHotoshop - cropping, cleaning up imperfections. In my camera bag
I have learned to always carry 2 camera bodies...you never know when something will come up. I carry a Nikon D4S because it is fantastic in low light situations and a D810 - lovely portrait camera. I carry several prime lenses because I love the sharpness that they produce. All of my lenses are 2.8, 1.8, 1.4 because I love creating beautiful bokeh in camera. 50mm, 60mm, 85mm, 24-70 and my 70-200 - I would never leave home without my 70-200. I also carry gear for rain because when you live in Houston...it is always a possibility. I always carry 2 speedlights with 3 Pocket Wizards and 2 Rogue Flashbenders.Feedback
It is important to think outside of the box and not see what is actually in front of you but to really think about what you can make out of it. When you find yourself in a location that is less than desirable think about how can manipulate what is here and make a great image. Most people think you need lots of light when in fact the curtains in this room were only open about 3 inches...Also posing is incredibly important...lowering the front shoulder on women helps to elongate their neck. Also turning their body away where their chin comes back to camera helps to make a more interesting image rather than shooting straight on. Big smiles don't make the most interesting photograph...work with different expressions from solemn and work your way up with a client to find what fits them.
