A spectacular vista showing the vast Milky Way galaxy overshadowing the full moon during a total eclipse. The moon looks red during a total lunar eclipse because of sunlight that is filtered and refracted by the Earth’s atmosphere. This photograph was captured during the lunar tetrad of 2014-2015. What is a tetrad? It’s four successive total lunar eclipses, with no partial lunar eclipses in between, each of which is separated from the other by six lunar months (six full moons). The location of this image was inside the White Tanks Regional Park near Surprise Arizona.
