This shot is an image from a series I produced while travelling abroad recently in Scotland. I wanted to be able to channel the passion I feel for the home of my family, though the hidden gems featured in my images.

Location
This photo was shot in Bothwell in Glasgow Scotland. Bothwell castle featured in this shot is one of the many ruined castles on the list of sites under Historic Scotland.Time
This shot was captured mid afternoon in an overcast day.Lighting
I wanted this image to resemble a painting so to create this I shot the base image on an overcast day which allowed me to overlay a more dramatic sky more naturally in post production.Equipment
I used a canon 5D Mark ii, a sigma art series 50mm 1.4 lens, tripod and remote trigger. All shot natural light.Inspiration
I was inspired by the idea of a faceless figure wandering the highlands in search of her ancestors. Bothwell Broken is part of a larger series I created over 6 weeks spent in Scotland and holds a very special and personal place in my heart. My mother was born in Scotland and moved to Australia when she was very young, so the trip where I captured this image was not only my first time visiting the country my mother was born, it was also my mums first time back there in over 50 years.Editing
I did a bit of post processing in photoshop, mainly inputting a new sky to fit the dramatic effect I wanted. Slight colour manipulation to create a warmer feel and then a textured overlay across the image to create that painterly effect. In my camera bag
I keep it simple :) purely a camera and my sigma 50mm lens. I shoot everything natural light so don’t require a lot of equipment.Feedback
Research your chosen locations to work out the best angles and time of day in advance to capture the shot you’re after. Also be prepared to shoot multiple shots, it’s very rare you get your winner on the first try, practice definitely makes perfect.
