Behind The Lens
Location
I had stopped at the summer camp of a good friend for the evening. The kids were about to start a campfire just to the right of the frame, and I stepped away from the group to capture the end of sunset over the lake. This is Great Pond, in Belgrade, Maine, USA. As a first-timer at the camp, the colors and beauty of the location really stood out.Time
While lounging around and catching up with my friends before dinner, I had scouted out the location and framing for this shot. I knew I wanted the trees to naturally frame the sunset, and the cloud cover was perfect for the deep and colorful light saturation. This was about 10 minutes after sunset, mid-July.Lighting
Natural lighting.Equipment
Shot with a Canon 6D, 24 - 70L lens. Using a tripod.Inspiration
When you travel around the world, you see sunrises and sunsets at different elevations and with different natural features. Sunset in Maine, during the summer, immediately makes me think of good times with friends.Editing
Minimal.In my camera bag
At the time of this picture, I had my Canon 6D, 24-70 lens, and a tripod. Since, my bag has changed a bit. The 6D took a swim in Vietnam and has been replaced with a 5D Mark IV. The lens collection has grown, and now includes a 16 - 24 mm that I love for landscapes and a 50 prime that I love for low light and details.Feedback
Being in the right place at the right time is something that you can often plan for. I had already set up my tripod and scouted the framing of the shot. I also knew that the colors change over a sunset, and the most spectacular colors are often between 5 and 15 minutes after the sun crosses the horizon. The tripod or stable surface to shoot from is key to this as well.
