Behind The Lens

Location

I was traveling through Colorado when I met up with a new model from Pueblo. We took this image in a steampunk store in downtown Pueblo. In the back of the store, there was a small bar that looked like it would have a couple hundred years ago. The owner of the store let us shoot in there for exchange of images.

Time

I was strolling through downtown Pueblo around late afternoon when this photo was taken.

Lighting

The lights used in this image was a on camera flash. Nothing fancy.

Equipment

I shot this image with my Canon 5D Mark III with a 50mm lens on a tripod.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this photo was Colorado as a whole. There is so much American history in this state and I wanted to capture that history and mesh it with a modern attitude.

Editing

On this imageI tweaked the image in photoshop to give it a feeling of being an old photograph. I used a mix of scanned old papers, along with my own texture I made via coffee stains on watercolor paper. I brought all these various elements together to make this feel like an old film photo. I even have a cyanotype version of this photo.

In my camera bag

When I am on a road trip style shoot I normally carry my Canon 5D Mark III paired with a 24-105mm and my 85mm prime lens. Besides my camera and lenses, I bring a tripod, laptop and extra camera batteries.

Feedback

Study what it is your want to capture. This image was easy for me because I study American history and what small towns like Pueblo have gone throughout the years. Most importantly know how to use your camera and be open to your surroundings. If I wasn't open to my surroundings I never would have captured this image.
