I shot this photo at home while my daughter was coloring at the kitchen table.Time
I shot this one in the morning. I tend to have my camera handy whenever something presents itself.Lighting
The ideal lighting in this area of the house makes for some great photos--the table faces an east-facing bay window, with yet another window to the south. Because of this, I can use just natural light which brings a lot of depth and warmth to my subjects.Equipment
I am an amateur who can't afford (or carry around) a ton of equipment. I shot this on a Canon Rebel XS with my old nifty fifty lens wide open at 1.8.Inspiration
I love shooting my kids at the kitchen table because this captures what they do--my daughter will sit and color for hours. I primarily take pictures of my kids, but I try to capture them in natural states--I don't do a lot of post processing, and I don't do a lot of posing. I generally sit and talk to her while she's busy and wait for the right moment to press the shutter.Editing
I did very minimal post processing on this photo (my subject is beautiful enough without it). I sharpened the eyes a little and adjusted the curves, and that was it. I loved the catch lights in her eyes and the serene look on her face when she looked up from her coloring--her lovely curls and round little rosy cheeks are perfectly her at this age (3).In my camera bag
Again, I am an amateur, so I have my Canon Rebel XS (I'm looking into upgrading after 7 years with it though). I usually have my kit lens with me as well as a 35mm and 50mm--I love to shoot wide open for lovely bokeh and am always trying to capture sharpness in the eyes.Feedback
I take a lot of photos. Some are fantastic (this is one of my favorites of all time); most are pretty good; some are garbage. As an amateur, I like to play with my equipment and try new things--the great thing about digital is I can try so many new techniques. I have been shooting my kids all of their lives; I try to be unobtrusive and capture their essence in photos while they are doing fairly ordinary things. I don't have the time (or patience) to set up elaborate scenes, and I like to look back at pictures of my kids as they truly were at that moment in their lives.
