The photo was taken at Haverthwaite station on the Lakeside to Haverthwaite Heritage railway in the Lake District. Haverthwaite is where they fill up the steam trains. It also has a number of exhibits in the engine shed. The water tower is at the end of the platform, so you can get reasonably close when they are filling up.Time
It was taken mid afternoonLighting
Nothing special about the lightEquipment
The image was captured using a 60D with a sigma 20-60mm F2.8. I usually shoot on Aperture Priority adjusting the ISO to suit, so that I can get the depth of field I am after at a shutter speed I am comfortable with handheldInspiration
I like steam trains and I wanted to capture some images of them filling up with water. When the train is generating a lot of steam, the images can be quite atmospheric.Editing
I try to limit my post processing to sharpening and a little colour correction. The image was converted to black and white using the NIK software. In particular I am a fan of Silver Efex Pro. I am waiting to see how much it can be improved by DXOIn my camera bag
Since taking the picture my kit has changed a little. I now shoot with a canon 80D. I normally use the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 (I love this lens). If I need a slightly longer focal distance I have my Sigma 24-60 F2.8. I have just purchased the Sigma 24-105 F4 OS HSM. Haven't used this in anger yet. I also have a Sigma 105mm Macro F2.8 for close up work and a Canon 70-200 F4.Feedback
Be patient, have your camera ready and wait for the opportunity to present itself. Don't just think in terms of colour, try to visualise how it might look in black and white. Ask yourself, does it look better? If at first you don't succeed, keep trying until you get the image you are after..
