Behind The Lens
Location
American Falls Fish Hatchery in Idaho, USA.Time
This was in the afternoon.Lighting
Normally, when photographing birds in flight the bird is backlit. This photo is unusual because the body of the bird is catching the sun.Equipment
Nikon D7100 and Sigma 150-500 lens.Inspiration
For how common they are, it is difficult to get a close up photo of a Great Blue Heron. This one happened to fly very close to me so I could not resist snapping a photo.Editing
I cropped the image a bit, so I sharpened it. I also upped the shadow value so I could see more detail in the primary wing feathers. In my camera bag
Nikon D7100, Sigma 150-500, Nikon 35-50mm, Nikon 45mm macro, lens cleaning cloth, sibley's guide to western birds.Feedback
Practice, practice, practice. It takes a lot of practice to be able to life the camera viewfinder to your face and frame up a flying bird. Practice whenever you can.
