Location
This photo was taken at Monaco Glacier, in the Artic ocean, a few hundred miles south of the North Pole.Time
This photo was taken around 11amLighting
This time of year in the artic there is light 24 hours a day, but there is also a lot of clouds and very few clear days. On this rare sunny day the light off of the ice was just brilliant!Equipment
Nikon D750, handheld with a Nikon 28.0-300.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens at: 250mm/ƒ/8/1/1000s/ISO 200Inspiration
This photo is a great example of being in the right place at the right moment. It is a picture of a rare glacial pop up, where glacial ice breaks off the bottom of a glacier and unexpectedly pops up. Where it is common to see calving of ice off glaciers, it is unusual to see this kind of breakage. The artic birds love this kind of break, since millions of plankton are found on the underside of the ice that is now exposed.Editing
Lightly processed in Lightroom: slight crop and contrast enhancedIn my camera bag
Being that I do travel/nature photography I try and carry as little as possible in my bag. I have my Nikon D750 and the Nikon 28.0-300.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens as my go to gear. I will also carry a wide 18mm and 35mm lens if I am going to a place that will be mostly landscape shots. On areas where there is a lot of wildlife, will carry a Tamron 150mm - 600mm lens as well. I will also carry my mirrorless Olympus OM-D E-M10 as a back up, or for long trips.Feedback
If you are able to explore the Artic, you can expect to capture thousands of amazing moments. It is a land of great beauty and amazing wildlife. It is not difficult to find beauty in such an untouched land- the hardest part is getting there!
