Morning shots at the rookery are usually avoided because of the harsh backlighting, but decided to make the early morning adventure anyway.Lighting
Knowing the lighting would not favor the mid morning shots, decided to get there just as the sun peeked over the horizon, this allowed for a very orange glow, and hoping for some great silhouettes. The sun coming through the nest was an added surprise..Equipment
The camera was a Canon 7D, or Gitzo Tripod, using a Canon 500mm f4 lens.Inspiration
Most birding photographer's like to capture early morning shots of birds awakening and flying in search of food. My goal was too try and get some rim back lighting shots of the birds, but the silhouette shots was just added bonus.Editing
Very little post processing, just a little brightness and contrast adjustments were done.In my camera bag
Usually on birding trips, two camera bodies and several lenses including the 70-200mm, 300mm, and 500mm.Feedback
These shots usually required the photographer to get up early in the dark, and the rookeries or nesting areas there is no light. Mosquito's, snakes, alligators and other animals are very hard to see. I did this trip alone, but would not recommend doing this along.
