Behind The Lens

Location

I was on the lower level of the amazing Fort El Morro in sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Time

I had been touring Fort El Morro on a cloudless day in September of 2015 with my family. The sun was bright and hot. At about 3pm I headed to the lower level of the fort seeking some shade and cooler temps.

Lighting

The lower level of Fort El Morro was cooler, which was terrific, but was also dark which made the lighting a bit tricky. Also, I had left my tripod in the car which was a big mistake. That just added to the difficulties. Always carry your tripod!

Equipment

I used a Canon 7D with a 15-85 Canon lens, and no flash. As I said earlier, I did not have my tripod so I compensated by kneeling down, almost in a snipers pose, resting my elbow on my knee to keep it as steady as possible.

Inspiration

I was actually in a photo challenge at the time. The subject was leading lines. The arches were impressive and I thought they would be a unique take on leading lines. Just being at Fort El Morro was inspiring all by itself but these arches really caught my eye!

Editing

I did a bit of editing using Lightroom 3 software. I cropped the photo and brightened the lighting. Really very little editing was done to the photo. I wanted to keep the photo as natural as possible.

In my camera bag

My bag usually has the Canon 7D, my back-up body, a Canon 50D. My 50 prime with a 1.8/f, a Canon 15-85, and a Canon 55-250. Also, my Vanguard tripod.

Feedback

Just take your time! Always have your tripod with you. I was blessed that this photo turned out so well without a tripod. Would have been much easier with one. Be patient. It takes time to get the right photo. Take lots of shots of the same subject. Different angles, settings, etc. You never know which shot will turn out. Take shots of anything that catches your eye. It might be that " once in a lifetime" photo!
