Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in downtown Ada, Oklahoma. While the town I live in is super small, I'm extremely blessed to have several wonderful areas for photos!

Time

This shoot was so much fun! I took this photo in early fall, so it was between 3:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M. before it started to get really dark. I love shooting toward the end of the day, I feel like the lighting tends to be just perfect!

Lighting

Some of the areas were difficult to shoot in because of super shade and full sun. I found this little nook with reflective windows. It made it a little difficult to make sure my image isn't seen in the photograph, but it reflected light nice enough.

Equipment

I shot with my Nikon D3200, 18-55 mm AF-S lens. I also used a ring light, which is one of my favorite tools for up-close portraits. I also used a step ladder to get a little bit of height on the model. I'm not short, but when I'm in flats and they are in heels, it helps to get little bit more height on them.

Inspiration

Oddly enough this whole shoot was centered around a Halloween/ fall theme. We took several of Kylie in a mask, however, she wanted some plain ones for modeling portfolio. I also was wanting to play with my ring light some, so this was the perfect opportunity to do it!

Editing

Yes, at the time I was using Adobe Elements for editing my photographs. I brightened up her eyes, but I didn't need much post-processing.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D3200, two lenses (18-55 mm and 75-150 mm lens), ring light, Manuel flash, extra SD Cards, extra batteries and Lens Cleaner. I also carry around a Polaroid camera. I like to use it to document my sessions sometimes. I've also used the picture from the Polaroid camera as prop, and the camera itself has been used a prop before.

Feedback

Step ladder and ring lights where the main devices I used. I also was blessed with a very experienced model. I rarely have to give her direction. It's always good to have the models bring several pairs of clothing. I usually find a place I want to shoot and pick out the outfit here. Kylie wears pink lipstick in most of photos, so I can pick a spot to shoot and her outfit with that in mind! Shoot later in the day for similar lighting. Mostly just go out and have fun! You never know what shots you might capture but just experimenting!
