This photo was taken on Signal Hill, Cape Town , South Africa.Time
After a busy morning driving around Cape Town looking for the right light I decided to drive up to Signal Hill for a view over Cape Town and to get set up for some evening shots of the city. On arriving at the top at about 16h00 I was greeted with the mist rolling in and covering the top of the Signal Hill and giving it an almost surreal feeling as the sun was blazing down on the one side of the mountain whilst the mist was on the other side.Lighting
The lighting on this day was soft and diffused giving a wonderful subdued lighting effect in the forest and affording me the oppurtunity to capture this fleeting moment as an hour later the mist was gone and Signal Hill was bathed in bright sunshine again.Equipment
I had my CANON600D and Sigma 10-20mm 1:4-5.6 wide angle lens with me, no tripod was used as it was light enough for handheld shooting, I did up my ISO a bit though.Inspiration
This might sound strange but we had a good friend with some serious health issues and as we arrived at the car park at the top of Signal Hill we had just heard the news that she had passed away. It was such an eerie feeling arriving there in this mist with the bad news that I wanted to try and get the feeling across that in this time of sadness there is still beauty. Whenever I look at this picture I think of her.Editing
The picture was edited in Lightroom first by cropping to get one to focus on the trees and look into the forest and then I dropped the exposure a bit darkened the shadows increased the highlights, dropped the saturation and then used the split toning panel to add the warm colour as you see it now.In my camera bag
Landscape photography being a passion of mine I usually do not travel light. I will have my trusted CANON600D as well as my CANON70D (recently aquired) Tripod, Sigma 10-20mm 1:4-5.6 wide angle lens, Canon EF-55-250mm zoom lens, Canon EF-18-55mm, ND filters, Polarizer filter, Remote triggers, spare batteries, headlamp, plastic bags in case it rains and then lens cleaning cloths and always spare water.Feedback
Patience. I spend many a day driving or walking around after reading the weather forecast and looking for some weather to be happening. Early morning and late afternoon I find to be the best time for this type of shot as the sun is still low in the sky. It has happened many a time that as I set up to prepare or look for the shot the wind will pick up the mist will dissapear. If this happens I will make a note of what I wanted to achieve and where and I will return to get the shot.
