Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in the Coahuila-Texas museum in Monclova Coahuila in Mexico, the model in the picture is actually a cousin, being an amateur photographer does not allow you to pay a professional model. Until a few years ago I was able to purchase a decent camera and thus my journey into this amazing world of photography began, I did take a basic photography course and everything else has been trial and error, learning from what I see in other photographers work here in VB or in other sites.

Time

I don't recall exactly what time of day, I think it was around 8:00 PM, what I do recall is that it was late afternoon, after I got out from work @ 5:30 PM I went home and change, grab my gear and picked up my cousin at her house and drove to the location we were going to make the shoot, so we arrived at the site around 6 and it only took us a few minutes to start shooting.

Lighting

The sun was gone, the remaining light was enough but was fading away quickly, we were getting ready to leave (in fact my gear was already packed, the only thing left was my camera and the lens I was using) when she sat down and cross her legs to take her ballerina things (don't know how are they called) and the light was just right, I don't know how else to call it, it was just enough to take the picture so I kneeled and ask her to put one foot on tiptoes and continue what she was doing and this is what came out of it!

Equipment

This picture was taken with a Nikon D5100 and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens, no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

she is into ballet and I'm into photography so we talked about doing something that had to do with urban ballet, by the time this was made it passed about a year so we were really eager to do this, when I saw her sitting down and crossing her legs to take those things off and that rail giving a great depth perception I new I had to take that picture, the foot in tiptoes was something that I added to be more representative of what we were trying to accomplish

Editing

I did some processing, I cropped the picture to remove some people that were standing buy at the far end and adjusted the rule of thirds to have her in the left third of the image

In my camera bag

I don't have much equipment, I carry my Nikon D5100 camera and I have 3 lenses (all Nikon) 50mm f/1.8, 18-55mm (the standard that came with the camera which by the way was replaced with an 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6) and my old pal 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6, I have 2 Yongnuo IV flashes and a remote trigger for the camera and flashes, UV and polarized filters and recently some ND filters.

Feedback

I don't think I have the skills or knowledge to give advice to anybody, I'm still learning about this and every time I grab my camera I learn new stuff, either for composition, lighting or model direction, what I can do however is tell what has worked for me, I try to take my camera every time I go out and try to use it as much as I can, I can honestly say that I don't like every single picture that I take, but I learn from my mistakes and try to do it better the next time. Study other photographers work and before you see the settings try to imagine yourself behind the camera and ask yourself: what parameters would I use if this was my picture? Be patient and above all, practice, try to see every site as a potential masterpiece, don't be afraid of experimenting new things (perhaps new for us) and be proud of the pictures you do like because it has cost you a lot of sweat and hard work to take them!
