Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from San Antonio Texas' Historic Hays Bridge from which there is a great view of the city.

Time

This was taken around 6-7pm at Sunset in March. I had joined a meetup photographic group to catch the sunset and we were not disappointed that evening. The sun performed nicely. Joining with other photographers is a great way to learn.

Lighting

The photo was taken with available light.

Equipment

I owned the Canon Bridge - (Powershot - sx50hs) at the time and this is what I used. I also used a tripod.

Inspiration

I love sunsets and architecture - and this combination caught my eye.

Editing

The photo was shot in raw - and edited in Lightroom. It was edited on a computer I no longer use.

In my camera bag

I bought the Canon Powershot to make sure that my interest in photography would be serious enough to invest more in equipment. The Canon sx50hs has a manual setting which allowed me to learn to shoot in manual. I challenged myself to shoot 10,000 photos before purchasing any more equipment. (My interest in photography has been lifelong, but up until 3 years ago, was not serious enough to buy expensive equipment. I spent 25 yrs in Mexico where I always had a camera ready to shoot slides to send back home - and even before that time, I had other cameras) That evening the camera was all I had in my bag, along with the tripod and a remote. (I now own a Sony a6000)

Feedback

The more you shoot - the more you see. Photography is certainly a great way to learn to appreciate your surroundings more and to see things that may have been in front of you for years - suddenly you see them. I worked downtown for 7 years, and most always took a camera to work. Many days I wold walk around some street downtown, finding something new to shoot, before catching the bus home. I took the advice "always have a camera with you" seriously. Study photographs - meet with others - read books - watch videos (Creative Live) - all have been and continue to be my source of inspiration and learning. (Hays Bridge is a very popular location for photo shoots, and that evening there were at least 2 photographers at work - apart from quite a few enthusiasts taking photos of the city and of the sunset).
