Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at a spanish "cala" or cove called "Cala Cap Blanc" in Moraira, Spain. The cove is located at the Mediterranean coast with a view to the Peñón de Ifach and the city of Calp.

Time

The photo was taken the 31st of July, 2015 at 16:10. During a trip having a look at the different coves at our coast we had a lot of luck as the weather got quite stormy which makes the photo always a lot more dramatic and was exactly what I was looking for. It was at the brink of starting to rain and this was the last shot I could take that day. The combination of time of day and year is extremely important while photographing at the coast of the province of Alicante as the position of the sun can easily be obsctructed by the landscape. However, for this shot I wanted the sky to be obscured by clouds so and having a dramatic feel to it so generally speaking, the afternoon gives the light I was hoping for.

Lighting

I only work with available light. There's no difference in my approach for landscape or portrait.

Equipment

I use a Canon EOS 7D with the Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. The focal length of 15mm is perfect for landscape photography and was used in this shot. To get achieve the smoothness of the water I used a neutral-densitiy filter (ND 3.0) by Haida. The camera was positioned on a tripod. To take the photo I used an IR remote control.

Inspiration

The photo was taken quite spontaneously as we were examining the different coves at the coast for potentional locations. When arriving at the last, the "Cala Cap Blanc", we had such luck with the weather conditions that we decided to stay and I was doing some test shots trying to get the perfect composition. This photo has the composition I felt most satisfied with.

Editing

Due to the lack of a graduated ND filter I had to darken the sky and tweaked the contrast to add a more dramatic look to the clouds. The rest was only some colour and light corrections.

In my camera bag

My go-to camera system is the Canon EOS 7D with the Canon 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. It's a very versatile system able to being used in numerous photographic fields. Especially the focal length of 15mm is excellent for landscape and architecture photography. Additionally I have the Canon 50mm f/1.4 for portrait photography. The wide aperture is esential in achieving the look I aim to create in my portraits. As for accesories, I always put my IR remote control and a ND3.0 filter in my bag if I come across a location where a long exposure might be necessary to capture the photo I imagine.

Feedback

The time of the year has a high amount of influence in the atmosphere of the photo while capturing something at the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Patience and luck are the two main factors that one has to keep in mind. You might need to drive multiple times to the same location to get the weather conditions you expected. On the other hand, you might get somehting altogether different presented that is nothing like expected but might provide a result you are content with. And that, being in one's own right satisfied with the photos, should be the purpose in photography.
