Photography is more of a hobby for me so I am always trying to find a way to grab some shots in an average day. In this instance I set up a day at work where our very talented chef kindly prepared some dishes for me to shoot. So it was taken in our restaurant on East Perth, Western Australia.Time
I spent most of the day on this shoot ultimately getting about 14 different shots. I find that with food photos they take a bit of set up and planning and quite often a few different plates of the same food to find the right one.Lighting
I needed to make sure that the light was just right for this shoot. I think its super important with food that any highlights or shadows are deliberate and not an afterthought. Although I must admit it is something that I need to work on.Equipment
I was lucky enough to have the use of a Phase One 645DF and IQ180 Digital back for about 12 months, so of course I shot with it as often as possible. For the lens I use the Phase One Digital 120 mm f4.0 AF. The back was set at f8, ISO 50 with a focal length of 1200/10 with two sets of studio lights.Inspiration
This was one particular shot that I was looking for to add a certain colour explosion with in a set of new menus we were looking at launching. It was important to have subject that was bright and appetising while remaining simple enough not to draw your attention away from the other information with the menus. I believe that we achieved this with this image.Editing
I would love to say none, it is as it was shot, but yes there is some post processing done on this image. I like to use Capture one for the processing of the Raw image and then Photoshop just to do final touch ups. This particular image didn't need much of either, I tweaked the sharpness and the contrast and removed a few spots around the outside and on the top of the focused strawberries and of course I ensured that the white balance was correct, nothing in Photoshop for this one.In my camera bag
Now I have a bag packed and ready to take with me always, it will contain my Canon 5d III with two lenses, normally the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM along with a monopod, lens cleaners and mini air blower, a spare battery or two and a couple of compact flash cards. Everything you need for that spontaneous shootFeedback
It’s never simple to shoot a good food shot, be prepared, organised and patient. Take your time to set up your lighting and surroundings, whenever possible I think some natural light is okay but never florescent lights, try LED, studio or flashes or combinations of. Don't think you have to shoot hot food hot or cold food cold, the camera doesn't know the difference. Oh and have someone that knows food around, you just never know.
