Behind The Lens

Location

i took this photo in a local country park called Tehidy woods near camborne in cornwall .they have got sum nice woodland walks with a lake, cafe, toilets with wonderful family friendly marked out walks ranging from 1 mile to 7 miles and loads of friendly wildlife that the kids enjoy the most.

Time

this picture was taken at the end of october 2015 around 4:30pm on the way back to the car park after a hot and sunny 5 mile walk through the trees.

Lighting

all natural lighting filtered through autumn tree tops so was not too harsh.

Equipment

equipment used was a canon 400d with a tamron af 55-200mm 1:4 -5:6 and a uv filter.tripod and a remote shutter release.

Inspiration

i had been practicing with hdr and when i first saw this series of small waterfalls it was ideal for hdr with a bright patch of sky reflected in the water with a lot of dark shadows over the water and on the bankside.at the same time i had been trying to get into long exposure so when i saw this i thought to myself i wonder if i could mix the two deciplines??so thats what i did.

Editing

yes i run a linux pc so i am limited to what post-processing programs i use but i found sum good free ones. For the hdr part i used Luminance HDR which works seamlessly i then run the image through a program called Raw Therapy which was working fine but then had a update which rendered it useless for 32bit systems. So im saving for a 64bit system just so i can use this program again which gave outstanding results in raw format and jpeg format.

In my camera bag

canon 400d with 4 fully charged spare batteries ,2 spare CF memory cards, kit lens 18 - 55mm,tamron 55 - 200mm,a bower lens 500mm with a x2 adapter,a set of cokin filters with a holder, various cleaning equipment (brush blower and cloth)a canon x2 adapter which doesn't fit the canon lens but works perfect with the tamron lens,a set of macro filters at different strengths,a remote triggered flash with 2 sets of spare batteries, pen, notebook and a head lamp with 2 sets of spare batteries just in case. basically every bit of my equipment fits into one bag so i can go out at a moment's notice the only other thing i have to carry is my tripod which has its own holdall.

Feedback

put the camera into manual mode.i took the first shot of three @f20 ,55mm,and exposure time of 15 secs.the second shot was @f22 ,55mm,same exposure time of 15 secs.the third shot was @f18 ,55mm,same exposure time of 15 secs.then used Luminance HDR to stitch all three shots together.the best advice i can give is to not use auto on the camera experiment a bit if your using digital and you don't like the shot then just delete and try another setting.by doing this you will over time learn how each button or dial changes your shot.
