Location
I took this picture on a trip with a photographer friend to the Königsee in southern Germany.Time
This was actually shot a bit past noon in late summer - a time of day usually said to be be pretty boring light-wise. Of course, in the moring or afternoon the lake shore in the picture would have been mostly cast in shadow due to the near north-south-orientation of the lake. To plan out the best time of day for a particular location I use a sun and moon calculator (The Photographer's Ephemeris) where I can see exactly from which angle and how high the sun is going to be at a specific date and time.Lighting
Due to the Königssee being surrounded by mountains on nearly all sides, the light can be a bit tricky as the mountains often cast big parts of it in shadow. I particularly liked the sun on the huts right at the very end of the lake, like a spotlight on a stage. Lighting like this is always great to draw the eye to specific spots in a picture.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon 7D and Tamron f2.8 17-50mm - one of my favorite travel lenses due to its versatility.Inspiration
My photographer friend and I were taking a boat tour around the lake and due to very little wind we got almost perfect reflections of the landscape in the water. No need for a long exposure to get smooth water here :)Editing
I generally try to limit the post-processing of my images to contrast, light/shadow and dust removal. For this image I slightly dodged the shadowy part of the forest on the right side so it gets more structure. I also played with the contrast and clarity a bit to get close to the colors as I remember them being on location. In my camera bag
Usually for landscape trips I pack my trusty Tamron f2.8 17-50mm, a Sigma f4-5.6 10-20mm, a Sigma f4-5.6 70-300 and of course, polarizing filters.Feedback
Always have an eye on the weather in the mountains, as it can change pretty quickly (you usually can't see approaching clouds until they are almost on top of you). Also, don't go shooting reflections in the water if you know it's going to be a windy day.
