Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near the small town of Garrison, Iowa during a flood in 2010.

Time

This photo was taken after the rain stopped and the skies had started to clear later in the day just before dusk. The road was totally washed out as the creek overran the entire cornfield.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the golden hour in the water as the ripples reflected the awesome light breaking though the clouds.

Equipment

I used my Canon 20D hand held with just my 18-55m lens.

Inspiration

I was driving around looking at the devastation of the flood. I love capturing skies with awesome cloud formations, just after a storm is the best time to do so. The flood added to the effect of the image. I saw the reflection of the light with the grain elevators in the background caught my eye, as I am always in capture mode for images that speak to me as creative opportunities. My philosophy is the more I capture the better I will be prepared for being in the right place at the right time. I feel this was one of those moments.

Editing

I did some contrast and used the burn tool on the grain elevators and the water to make the color pop, I also made the metal brighter with the dodge tool in photoshop.

In my camera bag

I have a slingshot Lowe Pro bag that pretty much goes with me everywhere. In it I have several lenses. I still use my Canon 20D with an 10m, 18-55m, 50m, 200m, 300m and a 28-135m Stabilizer lens. I do have a tripod but seldom use it. I also use an external flash for better lighting.

Feedback

Just be ready all the time for moments to come because the lighting can change in minutes. I usually have my camera set for multi shots so I can get more captured. Don't over process things too much, try and get the shot as close to the way you want it then tweak it a little in photoshop.
