Behind The Lens

Location

At Kleine Bonaire, is a small 750mt out of Bonaire Island. The reef out there is pristine and colorful.

Time

Around 12 am.

Lighting

I've used two big underwater strobes to illuminate the scene and get all the colours "out of the blue". Without powerful strobes it is impossible the get back the real colours, that underwater start to disappear from 1m depth. At 20 m depth, where I was when I took the shot , was all filtered by blues.

Equipment

Nikon D80, Nikkor 10,5mm f.28- Alluminium Housing Easydive Leo2- Dome port 8". Strobe Nikon SB103 and Strobe Sea&sea 110aplha (both at full power).

Inspiration

The undrewater world always inspires me. In particular, this part of the reef with so many colours and biodiversity catched my attention, as representative of the site.

Editing

Yes, I edited the Raw file in camera raw. Basic adjustments where placed in shadows, highlights, blacks and vibrance.

In my camera bag

For topside photography I bring a Nikon D800 with a Nikon 24-70mm f.2.8 and a Tamron 70-200mm f.2.8. ND graduated filter, polarizers, UV filters. For Underwater: Canon 7D with a 10-17mm Tokina f.3.8 - Alluminium Housing Easydive Leo2- Dome port 8". Strobe Nikon SB103 and Strobe Sea&sea 110aplha

Feedback

Use a fishe eye or ultra wide angle lens. Get very close to the subject and angle the camera 30° upward. The strobes has to be on their arms and close to the body of the housing left and right, and orientated 45° outward on the sides. Is a common mistake to keep the strobe's arms wide opened and miss the correct illumination and avoide backscatters. Be sure your strobes cover angle can cover the foreground of the scene (considering the 120- 180° coverage of the lens). Use low ISO and fastest speed shutter possible and the highest aperture for more DOP.
